How to read vinyl runout & CD matrix codes

The dead wax between the last groove and the label — and the mirror band on a CD — is the disc's birth certificate. Here is how to read it, character by character.

1. Where the information lives

Every vinyl record has a smooth, ungrooved band circling the label. Collectors call it the runout, the dead wax, or the matrix area. During mastering, a lathe cuts the grooves into a lacquer disc, and the cutting engineer inscribes an identifying string into that blank band by hand or with a machine stamp. That inscription is carried through every stage of plating and pressing, so it survives into the finished record you own. CDs carry the same idea in a different place: a mirror band of etched text on the clear inner ring near the centre hole.

Because catalog numbers and cover art get reused across decades and territories, the runout is often the only way to distinguish a 1959 first pressing worth several hundred dollars from a visually identical 1974 repress worth twenty.

2. Anatomy of a matrix string

A typical runout looks like ST-A-712285-PR A1 ✳ MASTERED BY CAPITOL. Break it into parts:

  • Matrix / master number — usually the longest alphanumeric block (ST-A-712285). It identifies the specific side of the specific master. Each side has its own, so an A side and B side never match exactly.
  • Side identifier — a trailing -1, -2, A or B telling you which face you are holding.
  • Stamper / lacquer code — small suffixes like A1, 1A or #3. Lower numbers generally mean an earlier cut in the run, which collectors often prize for fidelity.
  • Plant suffix or symbol — the two-letter codes and glyphs covered below.

3. Mastering engineer stamps

Some engineers signed their work, and those signatures are among the most valuable marks in collecting. RVG is Rudy Van Gelder, who cut most classic Blue Note and Prestige jazz; a hand-etched RVG alongside an EAR plant stamp is a strong first-pressing indicator. LW or Lee Hulko points to Sterling Sound, whose STERLING stamp appears on countless rock records. TML — sometimes TML-S or TML-M — is The Mastering Lab. BG is Bernie Grundman, KP is Kevin Gray,MASTERDISK and MOFI speak for themselves. A machine-stamped engineer mark and a hand-scratched one can indicate different generations of the same title.

4. Pressing plant codes and symbols

Plants marked their output so returns could be traced. In the United States, PR means Presswell (New Jersey), SRC is Specialty Records Corporation (Olyphant, PA), MO or Monarch with a diamond glyph is Monarch Record Manufacturing in Los Angeles, PRC is PRC Recording, and W inside a circle marks a Columbia/CBS plant. In the UK, a stamped KT or a matrix beginning XEX / YEX signals EMI Hayes, while a tax-code letter tells you the pressing year. German pressings often carry a small Sonopress or Record Service Alsdorf mark. Non-letter glyphs matter too: a star, a triangle, or a bullseye can be the only difference between two otherwise identical runs.

5. Reading a faint etching

Hold the record at a shallow angle under a single bright light — a desk lamp or phone torch works — and rotate it slowly until the scratches catch the beam. Shoot the light across the surface rather than straight down. A phone camera with the flash off and pinch-to-zoom is often easier to read than your eye, and lets you compare characters later. Wipe the dead wax first; dust hides thin strokes. Distinguish carefully between the digit 1 and the letter I, and between 0 and O.

6. Reading CD matrix codes, IFPI codes and barcodes

Compact discs carry the same identifying information as vinyl, just in a different place and a smaller typeface. Everything below applies to CDs, and each of these strings can be pasted straight into the lookup tool.

Where the CD matrix band is

Tilt the disc under a lamp and look at the clear plastic ring between the centre hole and the start of the data area — the mirror band. Etched into it you will find a long alphanumeric string such as 7243 8 12345 2 6 01 * or DIDX-004352 2. That is the CD matrix (sometimes called the mastering SID area or simply the inner-ring text). It names the plant, the glass master and often the catalog number, so two CDs with identical artwork can be told apart by it. Read it with the label side facing you and rotate slowly; the characters are shallow and only catch light at an angle.

IFPI mastering codes (L-codes)

An IFPI code beginning with L — for example IFPI L553 — is the mastering SID code. It is laser-etched into the mirror band alongside the matrix and identifies the plant that cut the glass master. L0xxL9xx values map to specific facilities: L011 is Sony DADC Austria, L551L556 are EDC Germany, L133 is PMDC USA. Discs pressed before roughly 1994 predate the scheme and carry no IFPI code at all, which is itself a useful dating clue.

IFPI mould codes

A second IFPI code without the L — such as IFPI 94V3 — is the mould SID code. It is moulded (not etched) into the plastic, usually just inside the centre hole on the label side or on the opposite edge of the mirror band from the mastering code, and it identifies the individual injection-moulding machine that formed the disc. Because glass masters travel between plants, a disc can carry an IFPI mastering code from one country and a mould code from another — normal, and often the fastest way to spot a licensed regional repress.

Barcodes and catalog numbers

The 12- or 13-digit EAN/UPC barcode on the rear inlay is the most reliable single identifier for a CD, since it is unique to a release and territory. Type it with no spaces or dashes. The catalog number — printed on the spine, the rear inlay and usually repeated on the disc face (CDP 7 46001 2, 314 523 456-2) — is the next best fallback when the barcode is missing or the shrinkwrap sticker is long gone.

7. Turning an etching into a search

Long strings rarely match exactly, because the person who catalogued the release may have transcribed spacing, dashes or symbols differently. Start with the full string, then trim. Drop trailing stamper digits, drop plant suffixes, and search just the core matrix or catalog number — ST-A-712285 instead of ST-A-712285-PR A1. On CDs, drop the trailing IFPI code and any single digits after the main block before retrying. Symbols cannot be typed, so leave them out and use them afterwards to confirm the match. If several pressings come back, compare label, country, year and format against the disc in your hand before trusting the valuation.
